Seismic raypaths in the Earth

These plots show the paths of various seismic waves that can be used to study Earth's interior (return to image directory page)

NOTES:
These images were made using the "PREM model" [Dziewonski and Anderson, 1981, Phys. Earth Planet. Int.] for the P and S velocities in the Earth. The ray paths were calculated using the freeware package The TauP Toolkit, and plotted using the freeware package Generic Mapping Tools (or, "GMT"). This was done in a C-shell script. If you have these packages installed, then you can easily use the scripts below to reproduce these, or to make your own. Go for it!

GIF gives a GIF format image of the AI plot (or click image)
AI is the Adobe Illustrator (10.0) file of the plot
CSH gives the Linux C-shell script to make each plot
PS gives the postscript output of the C-shell
